“The greatest discovery of all time is that a person can change his future by merely changing his attitude” - Oprah Winfrey
Having recently been mightily challenged by a completely unforseen business event that had a major effect on my day-to-day life for nearly two years, I will be the first to admit that the constantly changing landscape was difficult to navigate.
Now it is over, and I have had time to reflect on how I handled it and what I learnt.
I tried very hard to stay positive and to look at the unfolding issues with clarity, remembering I have always maintained that change should be embraced and welcomed - after all, who wants to stay the same!
The truth is that some days I allowed events to unfold with a cheerful and can-do attitude but other days, I did not deal at all well with the fact that things were out of my control.
And, right there, is a very valuable lesson that I learnt, finally.
Sometimes you just have to sit back and accept there is nothing you can do to alter the situation and in time, it will sort itself out one way or another.
Not an easy thing to learn when you have lived your life at full speed, making decisions every day, managing outcomes, striving to control situations and generally being impatient and aggravated when you had to press the pause button.
I am now much more laid back and willing to let situations unfold, without trying to have an immediate result or pushing for conclusions so I could move on to the next thing. If it happens, it happens; if it doesn't, well something else will come along.
Am I good at letting go? Let's just say - it's a work in progress!
